Urban | AA Files 76
AA Files 76 | Urban – Publication Maria Shéhérazade Giudici, the new editor in chief of the Architectural Association’s journal of record, invited Umberto Napolitano and Cyrille Weiner to offer their definition of the word “urban”. Here’s an excerpt:
In recent decades, however, we have witnessed the transformation of the adjective ‘urban’ into a noun: ‘the urban’. Such a shift is perhaps the best demonstration of the key role this word plays in a society that has, by all means, become almost entirely urbanised. Since 2014 more than half of the world population – that is to say, approximately 3.9 billion people – lives in conditions that can be defined as urban. The 2018 report of the World Urbanization Prospects1 of the UN predicted that by 2050 two out of three people will live in an urbanised area. This means that in the next thirty years ‘the urban’ will swell to host 2.5 billion people more than it does today.
Make A
Le Maillon Theatre
The first prototypes of the furniture of the Maillon were presented inside the theatre in July. As a true manifesto aiming to democratize furniture production without going through the traditional distribution process, MAKE A gives the Maillon theatre direct access to the construction plans for a series of easily-made pieces of furniture.
